Ukraine Gives Russians 48-Hour Notice

The acting Interior Minister of Ukraine, Arsen Avakov, has issued a warning to Russia-supporting protesters that if protests in eastern regions of Ukraine are not resolved within 48 hours via negotiations, they will be resolved through the use of force. Russia on the other hand has warned that they reserve the right to protect ethnic Russians in the Ukraine, setting up a potential conflict between the two nations within 48 hours if protests are not resolved by negotiations. Ukrainian acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Wednesday that the separatist protests in Ukraine’s eastern region would be resolved within 48 hours — either through negotiations or the use of force.

“A resolution to this crisis will be found within the next 48 hours,” Interior Minister Arsen Avakov told reporters in the capital Kiev.

“For those who want dialogue, we propose talks and a political solution. For the minority who want conflict they will get a forceful answer from the Ukrainian authorities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Russia has been insisting the fact that their troops are gathering in large numbers on the Russian side of the border with the Ukraine was no reason for the US or Ukraine to be concerned. Will these latest threats by Ukraine against Russian citizens in the Ukraine lead to Russia intervening to protect their citizens or are these Ukrainian threats akin to US threats against Russia, completely toothless?

Russia has said it does not intend to invade eastern Ukraine, although it says it reserves the right to intervene to protect ethnic Russians.

Moscow insists that Russian troops in the border area are taking part in military exercises.

“The United States and Ukraine have no reason to be worried,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “Russia has stated many times that it is not carrying out any unusual or unplanned activity on its territory near the border with Ukraine that would be of military significance.”
